Our novel direct viral RNA sequencing eliminates the need for gene specific primers to amplify a viral genome before sequencing. In the current feasibility study, we evaluated panels of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) Group M and Group O. Although this feasibility study demonstrated PCR amplicon free characterization of HIV, our approach could be expanded to simultaneous detection and characterization of other viruses, bacteria and fungi.
