The soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens is the etiological agent of plant crown gall disease. During infection, a segment of its tumor-inducing (Ti) plasmid is transferred to the host cell where it can integrate into the host genome. Analysis of the complete sequence of the Ti-plasmid will foster to understand in more detail the gene diversity of Ti-plasmids and the mechanism of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.
