Taxon-specific interactions between thermoregulation and thermal tolerance shape realised thermal safety margins in co-occurring Orthoptera and Lepidoptera

Data supporting the manuscript titled 'Taxon-specific interactions between thermoregulation and thermal tolerance shape realised thermal safety margins in co-occurring Orthoptera and Lepidoptera'. Data includes body temperatures and air temperatures recorded from Lepidopterans (butterflies) and Orthopterans (grasshoppers and crickets) along an elevational gradient in southern German Alps (Berchtesgaden national park) in August 2025. Data also includes upper thermal limits which were quantified using heat knockdown assays. Exact methods are in the manuscript. Lepidoptera CTmax data was collected in August 2025, Orthopteran CTmax data was collected from August-October 2020. Raw data was processed with the Insects_prepare_dataset.qmd file before being analysed in the Insects_thermal_traits_v3 file. All analysis was in R.
