Lab 2 - field training with plants - Dataset 4

Group Members (group 1): Gopaul Parbatie, Albert Lin, Gajamugan Rajavarothayan, 4th guy who joined our group because Arman dropped, but I didn't get his name. He was brown and wore glasses.<br><br>Methods for Dataset 4:<br><br>Dataset 4 of this study was done in a York University woodlot, from approximately 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm on Thursday September 24th 2015. The weather was clear outside, with no precipitation. 10 pairs of maple trees were sampled. One pair consists of an adult maple and its nearest sapling. The observer, Gopaul Parbatie, measured the DBH of an adult maple tree, identifying it by the leaf shape, measured the distance to the nearest sapling, and measured the DBH of that sapling, using a transect tape measure and the help of members of Group 1. This was repeated 9 times for a total of 10 pairs. Gopaul estimated canopy coverage by using his index fingers and thumbs to make a box and then pointing that box at the canopy of the adult tree to estimate the percent area the leaves covered. This was repeated for all 10 adult trees. In the case where the saplings were too small to measure DBH at breast hieght, the middle of the trunk was measured instead. The purpose of this part of the study was to train and gain the skills of using transects, identifying plant species, and practice recording observable traits.
