Romans used a wine trainer. Wine was kept and traded unfiltered in amphora, a syrupy fluid with pulp in it that had to be strained and watered before serving. Wine was drunk throughout the Empire. People who had the money could import fine wines from Greece; in army barracks, it was cheap 'soldiers vinegar' from Egypt.
