Dataset for Tree Crown Detection Methods

JILIN-1 KF01C multispectral scene (scene ID: JL1KF01C_PMSR2_20240621174656) acquired on 21 June 2024 over Reggio Calabria, at the southernmost tip of mainland Italy. The L4C product covers approximately 21.6,km2 at approx,0.5,m ground sampling distance across four spectral bands (near-infrared, red, green, and blue) enabling both true-colour interpretation and NDVI calculation. The acquisition date corresponds to peak foliar density for Mediterranean species, providing favourable conditions for crown delineation. Reference data consist of 800 individual tree crown polygons digitized manually in QGIS through visual interpretation of the true-colour composite, with NDVI used as auxiliary support; urban crowns were cross-checked against the Calabria ArcGIS REST inventory. The reference set is balanced by design: 400 crowns sampled from urban areas dominated by built surfaces and fragmented tree cover, and 400 from rural areas with continuous or semi-continuous Mediterranean canopy. Urban and rural strata were derived from the official Calabria Region land-use/land-cover layer, aligned to WGS,84 / UTM Zone,33N (EPSG:32633).
