VPRS 4723 Inward Registered Correspondence IV

This series consists of inward correspondence received by the Chief Secretary's Department. The contents of the series derive from the nature of the functional responsibility of the office. See VA 475 and VRG 26 in the Summary Guide for more information about the functional responsibilities of this office.Contents Date RangeWhile a good portion of the P consignment of this series contains post 1963 correspondence, the consignment also contains a substantial amount of correspondence which should, more correctly, have been registered as part of the previous series, VPRS 3992 Inward Registered Correspondence III (a couple of pre 1884 files appear to have been raised as part of the previous series, see VPRS 3991). This latter correspondence covers the period c.1874 to 1963 which accounts for the early contents date for this series.Series Date RangeIt is believed that the Department's registry system was updated around 1963 and the system of correspondence registers, indexes and annual single number document level control was superseded by a system of file level creation controlled by a card register. This card register is believed to be in the custody of the Ministry of Police and Emergency Services as at October 1992. Therefore in order to reflect the real date of commencement of the series and its possible end date, the series date range has been identified as ? 1964 to ? 1979.
