In 2009, the European Commission expanded the Land Use/Cover Area frame Survey (LUCAS) to conduct sampling and analysis of major topsoil properties across the 23 member states of the European Union (EU). This topsoil survey represented the first attempt to establish a consistent spatial database of soil coverage throughout the EU based on standardized sampling and analytical procedures, with all soil samples analyzed in a single laboratory. Approximately 20,000 sampling points were selected from the main LUCAS grid for soil sample collection. A standardized sampling procedure was adopted to collect approximately 0.5 kilograms of topsoil from a depth of 0–20 cm. The samples were sent to a central laboratory for physical and chemical analysis.
