Bacillus licheniformis is widely used for the large-scale industrial production of proteins. We identified the strong promoters for gene expression by dissecting the transcriptome of B. licheniformis ATCC14580 in post-log phase. In total, 3,959 genes of 4,208 B. licheniformis genes were transcribed under the selected growth condition. Transcriptional start sites (TSS) of 197 annotated genes and 1249 operons were identified. To screen for strong promoters, the candidate promoter pBL9 displayed the strongest beta-galactosidase specific activity, which suggests that it could be used effectively for heterologous gene expression.
