This volume is titled: 'New South Wales. Department of Navigation. Particulars of Competency and of Service which have been issued at Sydney to Masters, Mates and Engineers in the Mercantile Marine under the provisions of the Navigation Acts of New South Wales and the Orders in Council made under the Imperial Merchant Shipping Acts (Revised to 31st December, 1916).' The volume refers to Certificates issued between 1872 and 1916. and was published in Sydney by William Applegate Gullick, Government Printer in 1917.It is an alphabetical list by name which includes Name of Holder, Nature of Certificate, Number of certificate, Date of Issue and Particulars of Identification of Holder (Place of Birth, and Date of Birth). Birth dates between 1814 and 1893 are included in this volume. Places of birth include both New South Wales and foreign (such as United States, New Zealand, England, Scotland and Sweden). Certificates include those for Masters, First Mates, Second Mates, Only Mates, Extra Mates, First-class Engineer, Second-class Engineer, Third-class Engineer, Extra-First-class Engineer, Marine Surveyor, Pilot exemption and Compas Adjuster. Some certificates are noted as '(Service)'. Some certificates for Masters are limited ( to areas, such as between Sydney and Brisbane Water, Sydney and Broken Bay, Broken Bay and Botany, Jervis Bay to Port Stephens, 'adjacent colonies' or 'within jurisdiction'; or for 'pleasure yacht only'). Certificates may be limited to Foreign, Foreign-going steamship, Coast-trade ship, Harbours and Rivers (H. and R.) or Harbour and Rivers steamer.
