The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak caused massive troubles in Italy. The resilience of the Italian healthcare system and the limited capacity of hospitals were among the most challenging issues facing authorities. As the graph shows, the spread of the virus put hospitals and medical staff under a lot of pressure. At its peak, in April 2020, the number of COVID-19 patients treated in intensive care units (ICU) across the country exceeded four thousand. As of November 13, 2024, 62 COVID-19 patients were being treated in the ICU. The limited capacity of Intensive Care Units has been a dramatic issue in Italy since the start of the pandemic. In the last months, however, the country saw the end of this terrible situation: as of November 2023, roughly 85 percent of the total Italian population was fully vaccinated.
