Pyrometallurical slags are reused where possible i.e. mostly in construction industry. Not all slags can be reused, due to high load of hazardous elements and unfavorable characteristics a large portion also is stocked in waste piles. The aim of this research is to identify materials to be synthesized in the slags which have favorable properties for reuse. We have identified Li-ion battery recycling slags in a study on slag analogues having very interesting luminescence properties. These materials have a simple composition of Ca, Si, Mn and Li. Besides understanding the composition and properties of the materials, a deeper understanding of the genesis of these materials which usually evolve under non-equilibrium conditions is targeted. With this respect we have studied molecular dynamics simulations and non-equilibrium thermodynamics of slag analogue melts as well as experimental approaches including studies on fast cooled and slow cooled specimens to characterize the material.
