Conducting quantitative research on forest vegetation evapotranspiration in the Qilian Mountains is of great significance for accurately understanding the hydrological functions of the Qilian Mountain forest ecosystem, clarifying the water cycle process, developing watershed hydrological models, and formulating rational forest management plans. Forest evapotranspiration is primarily composed of sub-canopy soil surface evaporation, vegetation transpiration, and evaporation of canopy-intercepted water. Traditionally, evapotranspiration research methods can be categorized into two groups: actual measurement methods and estimation methods. Actual measurement methods include hydrological approaches, micrometeorological techniques, and plant physiological methods; estimation methods calculate evapotranspiration through models, which mainly fall into two classes: analytical models and empirical models. However, none of these methods can effectively differentiate between forest transpiration and evaporation. The sap flow method, which measures tree transpiration water consumption, can effectively calculate the transpiration volume of forest stands. We utilized heat pulse technology to measure tree transpiration water consumption, and scaled up the measurements to the stand scale to reveal the transpiration water consumption of Picea crassifolia forests.
