The Haus of Braganza was one of the most important and influential forces in the Portugese nobility. Its funding dates back to 1420 by Afonso, Count of Barcelos, the illegitimate son of John I of Portugal where in this very building he recieved the title of the first Duke of Braganza. The palace was destroyed in the earthquake and later renovated in the 19th century. A sister to this palace is the [one in Barcelos](https://skfb.ly/6Vorz), of which only ruins remain.
