This module offers an introduction to movement data and basic trajectory analysis using GIS. Tracking points of Turkey Vultures and Galapagos Albatrosses are provided, and learners practice analyzing movement both within a typical GIS interface like Mapviewer as well as through programming. Learners are asked to (1) analyze tracking data, (2) describe movement patterns and changes over space and time, and (3) use programming to analyze data, map trajectory points, and calculate home ranges. The data provided in the module are pre-processed to remove outliers, and the tracking points are segmented according to the bird’s movement patterns into categories such as breeding and non-breeding. Technical Requirements: This module uses ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Notebook and requires the student to have an ArcGIS account.
