Bight 03 Debris Harmonized
The Southern California Bight (SCB) is an open embayment along the coast between Point Conception and Cape Colnett (south of Ensenada), Baja California, and is an important and unique ecological resource. The SCB is a transitional area influenced by currents from cold, temperate ocean waters from the north and warm, tropical waters from the south. It has complex topography with offshore islands, submarine canyons, ridges, and basins that provide a variety of habitats supporting more than 500 species of fish and several thousand species of invertebrates. The SCB is also a major migration route for marine birds and mammals and a substantial economic resource, with Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor being the largest commercial port in the United States. The 2003 Southern California Bight Regional Monitoring Project (Bight'03) is a continuation of cooperative regional-scale monitoring efforts begun in the 1990s, building upon the Southern California Bight Pilot Project (1994) and Bight'98. This dataset contains trawl debris data collected between July 17, 2003 and October 13, 2003 as part of the coastal ecology component of Bight'03. Debris captured in trawls was classified by type (e.g., plant material, plastic, cans, fishing gear, metal debris, tires, glass bottles, lumber, medical waste, etc.) and scored according to relative abundance and estimated weight. The amount of plastic, metal, and other anthropogenic debris on the bottom serves as a measure of human influence on the benthic environment. Multiple organizations participated in data collection across the SCB study area, spanning depths of 10 to 200 meters, with some coverage of offshore and inshore habitats including coastal lagoons, the upper continental slope, and inner basins.
