VPRS 14447 Ledger Cards - Advances to Municipalities, Closer Settlement Acts

This series consists of ledger cards recording amounts owed to the Closer Settlement Board (from 1933 the Closer Settlement Commission) by municipalities throughout Victoria for advances made to them for the construction mainly of roads on and in the vicinity of closer and soldier settlement estates. Details given are of the principal and interest owing, any arrears, the amount of instalments and details of payments made by the municipality.Section 6 of the Closer Settlement Act 1907 had first provided for these payments. These were continued and covered by Section 99 of the Closer Settlement Act 1915 and Section 133 of the Closer Settlement Act 1928. This Section provided for the municipality, on the requisition of the Board (or Commission) to undertake work necessary for public traffic and drainage where this was deemed to be necessary for the development of the land. Three-quarters of the cost of such works was to be provided from the Closer Settlement Fund with the remaining quarter to come from the council's Municipal Fund. However, this quarter could be advanced to the council by the Closer Settlement Board (or Commission) with repayment to be made under mutually agreed conditions.This series was previously registered as Units 30 to 33 inclusive of VPRS 753 / P Records of the Closer Settlement Agencies.
