资源简介:
Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU) undertook an archaeological evaluation at land north of Station Road and Stow Road, Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire (TL 0968 6854) to assess the site’s archaeological potential prior a planning application by Bloor Homes. Fieldwork took place between the 4th–14th August, 2025. The evaluation comprised 15 trenches located within an area of undulating agricultural land north of Kimbolton village. The evaluation identified evidence of a medieval to post-medieval agricultural landscape, primarily characterised by a post-medieval north-south and northwest-southeast field boundary intersection in the east of the site, which is recorded on maps from 1764 and into the 20th century. Associated north to south aligned furrows were present in nine of the fifteen trenches. Towards the east of the site, a further cluster of agricultural plough furrows occurred on a northeast-southwest alignment which is consistent with recent ploughing regimes documented on satellite imagery. Intermittent, undated, field system ditch fragments were also recorded in seven of the fifteen trenches and may relate to the later historical landscape. Colluvium was recorded at the foot of the hillslope and in dry valleys, thickening over the eastern part of the site. A recently backfilled post-medieval pond was identified at the southerly downslope extent of one the dry valleys. With exception of the pond, furrows and ditches, other anomalies identified during geophysical survey were determined to be geological in nature. The digital archive comprises PDF/A copies of the CAU grey literature report and Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI), a selection of site photographs (.tif files), a finalised site plan (.dxf), tabulated specialist data (post-Roman pottery), the site context register, and a finds catalogue (.csv files).
