Litter material from elevated traps was sorted into 8 categories (functional groups) according to standard NEON protocols. After drying and weighing, all material within each functional group was pooled at the site level and sent for chemical analyses, which was a new approach. Once all data were returned, the NEON terrestrial biogeochemical observations lead analyzed results with technical working group input.
