Symbiotic nitrogen fixation in rhizobia-legume associations has enormous importance in supplying nitrogen to plants. In particular, agronomically important crops yield can be improved by effective nitrogen fixation. Due to its exceptionally broad host range, Sinorhizobium fredii NGR234 constitutes a model organism to comprehend the molecular keys for efficient nitrogen-fixing symbiosis in a variety of legumes. NodVW is a two component regulatory system whose role in controlling nodulation signals was already described for other rhizobia. Through RNA-seq analysis, we characterized NodVW regulon in NGR234 in free-living conditions.
