HPTLC is a modern chromatographic technique in which the principle of TLC is sophisticated and automated bywhich the samples are accurately and precisely estimated which can be utilized for both qualitative and quantitativepurpose.Ocimum genus contains approximately 30 species of herbs and shrubs from the tropical and subtropical region of Asia,Africa and central and South America. However, the major place of diversity appears to be in Africa. The drug hasnumerous pharmacological activities like hypoglycemic, immunomodulatory, antistress, analgesic, antipyretic, antiinflammatory, antiulcerogenic, radio protective and antitumor. Major constituents of Ocimum sanctum includeseugenol, qurcetine etc. which are known to possess antifungal activity against candida albicans. The aim of the present study is to develop a novel High Performance liquid chromatographic (HPTLC) method for the quantitative estimation of flavonoid Qurcetine in hydroalcoholic extract of Ocimum sanctum.RESULT AND DISCUSSION:Comparing Rf values of standard and crude alcoholic extract following curves were obtained that were when compared and quantity of qurcetine was calculated it was found out to be 0.74 mg/ml. The method described above presents a novel solvent system for qualitative and quantitative estimation of qurcetine in Ocimum sanctum.CONCLUSION:In the quest for new antifungal drugs, medicinal plants mustnot be overlooked. Many essential oils possess antifungal or antibacterial activity and have been proposed for use incomplementary medicine. Although they are not widelyused in conventional health care, these oils have beenrecommended for use as home remedies for the treatment of vaginal candidiasis by numerous books and articles in the popular place.HPTLC is a modern chromatographic technique in whichthe principle of TLC is automated by which the samples areaccurately and precisely estimated which can be utilized forboth qualitative and quantitative purpose. In the presentinvestigation a novel solvent system for HPTLC analysis ofOcimum sanctum was designed which provides asophisticated method for determination of qurcetine inalcoholic extract of Ocimum sanctum, and thus can be used for quantitative studies.
