A dataset for material-specific packaging volumes in Finland in 2020

This repository contains the dataset described in the article " A dataset for material-specific packaging volumes in Finland in 2020" (Jylhä et al. 2026) and used in the research article "A novel method of accounting for plastic packaging waste" (Jylhä et al. 2025). This repository contains a dataset on industry-specific packaging accounts, covering the total volume of packaging placed on the market in Finland in 2020 for five packaging materials (fiber, glass, metal, plastic, and wood) and distinguishing between consumer and business packaging. Packaging volumes not captured in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) reporting have been included using the methodology presented by Jylhä et al. (2025). The methodology is based on reported packaging volumes and standard economic statistics. In addition, packaging volumes derived from EPR reporting and the above-mentioned statistics have been extrapolated for the years 2018-2019 and 2021-2024 by using packaging intensities of 2020 and inflation-adjusted turnover statistics for the target years. The dataset can be used in calculating packaging recycling rates in Finland, and the methodology is applicable internationally. Furthermore, highly industry-specific packaging accounts can be used in studying the origins of packaging waste streams. Data description article: Jylhä, H., Johansson, A., & Salminen, J. (2026).
