Rural Schooling and Socio-Ecological Governance Research: Bibliometric and Topic Modeling Dataset (Scopus, 2015–2026)

This deposit contains the data and analysis scripts supporting a bibliometric and topic modeling analysis of research on governance, rural communities and education. The corpus comprises 1,768 English-language journal articles indexed in Scopus (2015–2026), retrieved on 19 September 2026 with the query in search_strategy.txt. The analysis combines co-word science mapping (VOSviewer, bibliometrix) with document-level topic modeling (BERTopic: gemini-embedding-2 abstract embeddings, UMAP, HDBSCAN; 15 topics). A rule-based domain classification and a selectivity index test whether research on rural schooling is separated from socio-ecological governance research. The robustness checks cover a document bootstrap, a specification curve over 99 reference sets, core-document and rural-vocabulary subsets, an open-weight encoder (BAAI/bge-base-en-v1.5), repetition on 299 articles that passed title-abstract screening, and a shared-journal test. Candidate bridging articles, which study schools as sites or actors in environmental governance, were screened and coded by the function of the school. Contents:- search strategy and title-abstract screening decisions for all records, with criteria codes;- a coded article-level dataset (identifiers, topic, domain, lexicon codes, eligibility, bridging-article coding) with a codebook in README.md;- topic labels, terms and exemplars; the topic distance matrix; abstract embeddings (3,072-D and 768-D);- VOSviewer and bibliometrix exports and three-field diagram flows;- selectivity-index, specification-curve, sensitivity and reliability results;- analysis scripts in Python and R. The separation analysis can be reproduced from the files in this deposit alone. Raw Scopus records (abstracts and indexed keywords) are not included because the Scopus terms of use do not permit redistribution.
