Infection with Aphanomyces invadans has been responsible for large-scale mortalities of cultured and wild fish in 26 countries across 4 continents. Despite the huge economic importance of A. invadans, no information is available about the fundamental mechanisms underlying development and pathogenicity in A. invadans infection. There could be major variations in Indian A. invadans strain compared to the ones sequenced elsewhere and that might be contributing to it's emergence. We strongly feel, by comparing the genomic sequences of the Indian strain to the genome of previously isolated strain from different geographical region will enable to identify gene(s) those are unique to the Indian strain and will be useful in identifying key factors responsible for its emergence/virulence in the recent years and can be targeted for disease control.
