Lexical coverage and Netflix movie wordlist

This study aims to investigate lexical coverage and create a high frequency wordlist from 100 Netflix movies released in 2020 and 2021. The movie corpus consisted of 6 genres, which are action, animation, comedy, drama, romance and thriller. The 891,645 running words were analyzed using software called AntWordProfiler, AntConc to determine their lexical coverage and to create high-frequency wordlist. The results showed that 3,000 word families including proper nouns and marginal words provided 95% coverage, while 9,000 word families including proper nouns and marginal words provided 98% coverage. Moreover, the results indicated that 82% of the vocabulary containing in the corpus were found in General Service List 1st 1,000-word family. Ultimately, 547 word items that appeared frequently throughout the whole corpus and were considered by the experts to be appropriate to teach Thai middle school students. It is possible that watching movies regularly can lead to incidental vocabulary learning and the use of movie wordlist can expand students’ vocabulary knowledge.
