Platinum-group elements are widely used as tracers of the Earth’s chemical evolution. The proposed study follows up results of a highly successful previous AS-XFM experiment that located multiple “buried” grains of platinum group minerals (PGMs) within samples of mildly mantle derived igneous rocks. We propose to extend this study to obtain a statistically significant dataset that will allow us to investigate how PGMs interacted with silicate melt during magmatic solidification. This effectively exploits a natural laboratory to uniquely investigate how Pt behaves during partial melting of mantle-like rock.
