Epulos are unique amongst the bacterial world as they are the largest known heterotrophic bacteria, with multiple species relying on the formation of intracellular offspring for reproduction. Ca. Epulopiscium viviparus is the most well-studied epulo, however, it has yet to be cultured and its metabolic capabilities have not been determined. The aim of the study is to assemble its genome and reconstruct its metabolic and biosynthetic capabilities to better understand its biology.
