Introduction: Health literacy is understood from the perspective of health or education, as the translation of knowledge or the sense of literacy referring to the understanding of technical-scientific information that is provided to the population using health services. Objectives: To understand the perception of Family Health Strategies nurses on the topic of health literacy. Method: This is a qualitative study, carried out with seven nurses working in Family Health Strategies located in rural and urban areas of a municipality in Ceará. Data were collected via Google Forms and analyzed according to thematic content analysis. Results: Two thematic classes were identified: Health Literacy: from knowledge to implementation in care practice, and Health Literacy: deficits in professional training. In these, it was possible to identify the perceptions and use of this practice in care. However, there is an important gap regarding the deficit in teaching on the subject and the lack of training aimed at care practice. Discussion: This theme has been highlighted in some studies, suggesting that it may have relevance in care and better population health conditions, presenting itself as a little-studied predictive component of social inequalities. Furthermore, taking responsibility for improving health status, reducing health service costs and increasing knowledge regarding one's own health and self-care. Conclusion: Knowledge on the topic is still incipient for its effective application, however it is linked to health promotion with a view to self-care and disease prevention.
