Whole genome analysis of antimicrobial resistant E. coli strains isolated from broiler feces in Japan

Colistin is a polymyxin antibiotic used as a last-resort treatment option for serious infections and has demonstrated efficacy against multidrug-resistant organisms such as multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRP) and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA). These colistin-resistant bacteria limit treatment options and are feared to increase the risk of untreatable infections. From a one health perspective, we investigated cecal feces from livestock, especially broilers, to detect antimicrobials-resistant bacteria and to deduce whether there could be any potential risks to humans.
