资源简介:
Birmingham Archaeology was commissioned by Provision UK Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of a proposed development at land adjacent to 47 Parkside, Coventry (NGR SP 3381 7855). The evaluation took place in February 2010 and involved the excavation of four trial-trenches. Two trial-trenches were located at the northern part of the site and both revealed extensive medieval and early post-medieval archaeological remains. Sandstone foundations, layers and pits were uncovered and the pottery recovered provided dating evidence that suggested activity on site began around the mid-12th century and more intensive activity occurred from the early 14th to mid-16th centuries. Close to the southern boundary of the site a trial-trench revealed the well-preserved and extensive remains of the medieval city wall. A fourth trialtrench at the centre of the site did not reveal any significant datable features, but this in itself provided evidence which may confirm cartographic evidence suggesting that until the late 18th early19th centuries this area was utilised for gardens and orchards.
