Spin forming technology is a potentially attractive manufacturing platform for high-volume production of liquid hydrogen storage tanks in future hydrogen powered aircraft to deliver the net zero solution in air transportation. However, the non-uniform local deformation state occurred during metal spinning process generates non-uniform residual stress distribution and this has a significant impact on the service performance and post-processing of the components. The proposed studies are focused on the use of Engin-X neutron diffractrometer to generate maps of residual stress distribution over the entire spin formed AA5085 aluminium alloy parts in the form of either dome or cup shape, so to establish a fundamental understanding of interplay between process, part geometry and residual stress in spin formed components.
