VPRS 12657 Index to Orders in Council

After 1863, the Board of Land and Works (VA 744) had the responsibility of administering the Local Government Act 1863. The actual work of administration was carried out by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) and the Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875) until 1877 when the responsibility passed to the Department of Public Works (VA 669).This series provides a summary record of the central administration of local government after the passing of the Act with a large number of Sections of the Act requiring Orders-in-Council or the consent of the Board of Land and Works before action could be taken. This volume, arranged by specific sections of the Local Government Act 1863 records the actions taken where governmental interference was necessary under the Act, giving dates of the various stages and the names and details of the localities involved. These Sections related to the definition of municipal areas, the conduct of elections and the membership of municipal bodies, auditing and accounting requirements, the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, the collection of tolls, the annexation of land, the naming of municipal districts, the electoral boundaries within municipal districts and the appointment of officers.Further details regarding matters to which the Board of Land and Works had to give formal consent may be found in VPRS 1112 Schedules of Authorities and other Correspondence for the Consideration of the Board.VPRS 12657/P1 was formerly registered as Unit 3 of VPRS 1148 Gazette Extract Book.
