High tolerant and efficient whole-cell biocatalysts for upgrading biomass-derived furfural into high-value chemicals are urgently needed in biorefinery. In this study, a furfural tolerant strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 13032 (named Mutant R) was developed by adaptive laboratory evolution and rational design was subsequently applied to enhance 2-furoic acid and furfuryl alcohol production.
