资源简介:
The focus of this cross-sectional study was to characterize the vaginal microbiota of asymptomatic, sexually-active, and reproductive-age women representing four self-reported ethnic groups (White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic). Each woman self-collected two mid-vaginal swabs. The first swab was used to prepare a vaginal smear for Nugent gram stain analysis. The second swab was used for DNA extraction, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and detection of Candida albicans. In addition, participants measured vaginal pH and completed a detailed questionnaire on sexual health and behaviors.]]>
Reproductive-age women (12 to 45 years) were recruited to the study. Other inclusion criteria included regular menstruation and a history of sexual activity. Exclusion criteria included current pregnancy, use of NuvaRing for contraception, antibiotic or antifungal use in the past 30 days, and a report of sexual activity, vaginal discharge, or use of vaginal medications, suppositories, feminine sprays, genital wipes, or contraceptive spermicides within 48 hours of the visit.]]>
This study was conducted between June 2008 and January 2009 at three clinical sites, including two in Baltimore, Maryland (University of Maryland School of Medicine) and one in Atlanta, Georgia (Emory University).]]>
