BIOL2050 Lortie LAB 3: Grasslands Dataset 2 Species Abundance

We identified an easily spotted species of plant in the Cows Vetch, which flowers in a vibrant purple blossom. The grasslands provide a suitable environment because they feature a large amount of vegetation in condensed sections. The use of the transect method is efficient at identifying a specific organism over the large expanse of the grasslands area. The method is explained as laying out a 25m transact over a random line of the large area, and walking along the transact to observe the specific plant species on the line or very close to the line. We defined plants being close to the line as being within 5 feet of the transect. Our observed traits included distance from our initial point that the plant was observed, height of the plant, number of leaves, and number of flowers. Data observed and recorded on september 23, 2015 at the Danby grasslands lot of York University between the times of 2:30PM -5:30PM. Temperature was about 25 degrees celsius with winds of 15km/h. Distance: Measured in feet and inches by the distance walked along the transect before encountering the Cows Vetch Species Height: Measured in feet and inches from the base of the soil to the highest flower or point of the plant # of leaves: A brief overestimate of the number of leaves on every single branch of each section of the single plant # of flowers: An overestimate of the number of flowers including newly formed flower buds, and flowers heavily wilting. All flowers included from the single plant. Crowding Rating: Given a Rating from 1-3, a crowding rating of 1 means the plant is not surrounded by any other plants by a distance of 2 feet of the plant of study. A Rating of 2 signifies that the plant is in contact or in very close proximity (1 foot radius) to 2-3 other plants of the same species or others. A crowding rating of 3 means that the plant was completely surrounded by other plants that occupy the exact same space.
