中国と米国は言わずと知れた世界最大の二酸化炭素（CO₂）排出国で、2022年にはそれぞれ114億トンと51億トンを排出しており、他国を大きく引き離しています。米国は世界で2番目に排出量が多い国ですが、2010年以降は排出量が11パーセント減少しています。その一方、中国の排出量は2010年と比較して30パーセント以上増加しています。
CO₂の排出源
エネルギー部門はCO₂排出量が世界最大の産業部門のひとつに数えられ、石炭火力発電がその大きな要因となっています。中国では、今世紀に入ってから石炭火力発電によるCO₂排出量が急増しており、2022年には4.5ギガトンに達しています。
コロナウイルスの排出量への影響
中国は世界最大のCO₂排出国ですが、米国の累積CO₂排出量（1750年以降）は400ギガトンを超えており、中国をはるかに上回っています。両国の間に大きな開きがあるのは、中国の排出量の大半が過去20年間で生み出されたものだからです。産業革命以降の世界の累積CO₂排出量の約40パーセントを米国と中国が占めています。

China and the United States are renowned as the world's two largest carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitters, with respective emissions of 11.4 billion tons and 5.1 billion tons in 2022, significantly surpassing other countries. While the United States is the second-largest emitter globally, its emissions have decreased by 11 percent since 2010. Conversely, China's emissions have increased by over 30 percent compared to 2010. The energy sector is one of the largest contributors to global CO₂ emissions, with coal-fired power generation being a major factor. In China, CO₂ emissions from coal-fired power generation have surged since the beginning of this century, reaching 4.5 gigatons in 2022. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emissions has been significant, with China being the largest emitter of CO₂ globally, but the United States has a cumulative CO₂ emission of over 400 gigatons since 1750, far surpassing China. The discrepancy between the two countries is largely due to the fact that the majority of China's emissions have been generated over the past two decades. Together, the United States and China account for approximately 40 percent of the world's cumulative CO₂ emissions since the Industrial Revolution.
