This study aimed to identify and characterize viral microRNAs encoded by Japanese macaque rhadinovirus (JMRV). JMRV is a novel gamma-herpesvirus and was recently isolated from Japanese macaques (JM) with JM encephalomyelitis, a spontaneous multiple sclerosis-like disease. This work provides an important step towards understanding viral miRNA function in a non-human primate model system.
