VPRS 1310 Register Of Licences , Bairnsdale

Under a series of Land Acts between 1862 and 1869, persons were able to apply for licences to occupy land for a number of diverse purposes. Some of these puposes under section 50 of the Land Act 1862 allowed persons to legally occupy auriferous (gold-bearing) land which otherwise was closed to legal occupation.Entries in this register are to do with licences granted under Section 50 of the Land Act 1862, Section 39 of the Amending Land Act 1865 and Section 47 of the Land Act 1869.Details given are the registry number, the name of the licensee, the description of the land to be occupied (entered as the parish) and the purpose of the occupation and the date, period and cost of the licence. Further details are given relating to licence payments. In the remarks column, details are given of later purchase of the land or the cancellation or revocation of a licence.This series records the details under a number of Land Acts for the occupation of land in the Bairnsdale district. The purposes for which occupation was licensed include rural stores, a public house, fisherman's hut, sawmill, mill site and the grazing of stock on Crown land. Relevant sections of Land Acts were Secion 50, Land Act 1862, Section 39 of the Amending Land Act 1865 and Section 47 of the Land Act 1869.This series was reserialised in 2002. The previous units 2 and 3 are now VPRS 13041/P1 unit 1 and VPRS 13042/P1 unit 1 respectively.
