GEOLAB-SAFETY - Stability Analysis For Enhanced Tailings storage facilities

This repository includes the outcomes of the GEOLAB Transnational Access project SAFETY, carried out at Deltares' geotechnical centrifuge facilities and coordinated by University of Porto. The main goal of SAFETY (Stability Analysis For Enhanced Tailings storage facilities) is to evaluate and enhance the stability of tailings storage facilities (TSF) under adverse conditions. These facilities, used to store the fine waste material (tailings) from mining processes, are prone to instability issues such as liquefaction, which can lead to catastrophic failures. The project focuses specifically on analyzing the stability of dry stack embankments—a more sustainable and potentially safer method of tailings disposal. The project has attempted to simulate the behavior of tailings dams through a series of centrifuge tests.
