Comprehensive X-ray Characterization of Positive Electrode/Electrolyte Interfaces in Lithium-Ion Batteries

In this work we aim to study the electrode/electrolyte interface of the Li metal batteries, where two types of the active materials – LiNiMnCoO2, LiMnFePO4 – will be analysed at different stages of the battery charging process. The electronic state as well as the local geometry of the elements of interest will be probed at the electrode (sub)surfaces by applying the following synchrotron radiation-based techniques ex situ: XAS and XES at ID26 beamline, XPS and XRD at SpLine beamline, where each of these techniques provide unique information on the state of the material and complement the other ones. The obtained results will shed light on the complex processes taking place at the interface during de-lithiation.
