Identification of an autochthonous Chikungunya outbreak in central Italy. chikungunya virus was isolated from one patient and from mosquitoes suggesting high viral circulation. Climatic conditions, the highly urbanized context, diagnostic delays, the emergence of cases in a coastal recreational area close to the capital towards the end of summer are creating ideal conditions for transmission. The affected Region has activated vector control measures, enhanced surveillance and restricted blood donations in the affected areas.
