Whole genome sequencing data of E. coli K12 MG1655 cya colonies evolved under prolonged incubation on maltose MacConkey agar plates at 37 °C and 44°C. 48 mutants spontaneously outgrowing their parental colonies as secondary colonies with “white phenotype” were selected. The isolates were restreaked several times on MacConkey agar supplemented with maltose or mannitol, and strains that were unable to efficiently ferment both sugars (= “white phenotype”) were selected for whole genome sequencing (WGS).
