The halophilic archaeon Haloquadratum walsbyi dominate NaCl saturated thalassic lakes worldwide and may be amongst the most abundant organisms in nature. This microbe is unique due to its peculiar flattened and square shape. To better understand its physiology and the possible role of photoheterotrophic growth, we conducted a transcriptome analysis comparing the transcripts of cells harvested from batch cultures in the light and 12 hours later in the dark at the end of the exponential phase.
