Here we present the LakeATLAS dataset, which provides comprehensive aquatic environmental characteristics for more than 1.4 million global lakes and reservoirs with an area of at least 10 hectares. LakeATLAS is part of the larger HydroATLAS data repository, and expands the existing dataset of subbasin and river reach descriptors by adding equivalent information for lakes and reservoirs in a compatible structure. Consistent with the corresponding versions of HydroATLAS, LakeATLAS 1.0 contains data from 56 variables, grouped into 281 individual attributes, and categorized into six classes: hydrology, geomorphology, climate, land cover and use, soil and geology, and anthropogenic impacts. LakeATLAS derives these attributes by processing and reformatting raw data from well-established global digital maps at a 15 arc-second (~500 m) grid cell resolution, and spatially assigns information to each lake by aggregating data within the lake, in buffer zones within a 3 km vicinity around the lake, and/or across the lake's entire upstream catchment. The standardized format of LakeATLAS ensures broad applicability for hydroecological assessments ranging from regional to global scales.
