The mitochondrial genome of the placozoan Trichoplax adhaerens was sequenced by Yale University, using an isolate from the Grell Rea Sea. Trichoplax adhaerens has the largest known metazoan mitochondrial genome with characteristics of known metazoan outgroups, suggesting the phylum Placozoa is an early branch of the Metazoa.
