Deux générations d'immigrés africains (2006-2010)

Enquête ethnographique portant sur les immigrés d’origine subsaharienne, réalisée entre 2006 et 2011 (en France) par Jacques Barou et une équipe de chercheurs, notamment de la cellule Recherche de la CNAV, en sociologie, en anthropologie et en démographie. Le terrain, conduit entre 2006 et 2010 en régions parisienne et lyonnaise, repose sur la base d'entretiens semi-directifs conduits avec deux générations d’immigrés (parents et enfants d'une même famille). Le matériau, recueilli auprès de vingt-deux familles originaires de treize pays d’Afrique, est complété par quatre focus groups ainsi que des notes d’observations. L'enquête interroge le statut des immigrés noirs en France, à travers leurs trajectoires et les représentations qu'ils s'en font. La comparaison intergénérationnelle des visions de la migration, du pays et de la culture d'origine, ou encore de la famille apporte un éclairage nuancé sur des concepts centraux de la sociologie de l'immigration tels que l'identité ou l'intégration. Les entretiens permettent aussi de comprendre les discriminations, les contraintes sociales, économiques et politiques dans lesquelles les individus évoluent, ainsi que les différentes opportunités qui s'ouvrent à eux. L'analyse qui en a découlé a été publiée aux éditions Armand Colin et livre la diversité et la complexité de l'immigration subsaharienne en France. Nota bene : deux enquêtes ont été menées en parallèle au Royaume-Uni et en Afrique du Sud. L’équipe de recherche française a notamment collaboré avec l’équipe anglaise pendant la phase d’élaboration méthodologique. An ethnographic study focusing on immigrants of Sub-Saharan origin, conducted between 2006 and 2011 (in France) by Jacque Barou and a team of researchers – notably from the CNAV Research Unit – in sociology, anthropology and demography. The fieldwork, carried out between 2006 and 2010 in the Paris and Lyon regions, is based on semi-directive interviews conducted with two generations of immigrants (parents and children from the same families). The material, collected from 22 families originating from 13 African countries, is completed by four focus groups together with observation notes. The study explores the status of black immigrants in France through their trajectories and their representations of those trajectories. The intergenerational comparison of perceptions of migration, of the country and culture of origin, or else of the family, casts a qualifying light on central concepts in the sociology of immigration such as identity or integration. The interviews also contribute to an understanding of the discriminations, the social, economic and political constraints that individuals experience, as well as the different opportunities that become available to them. The resulting analysis was published by Armand Colin and shows the diversity and complexity of Sub-Saharan immigration in France. NB: two studies were conducted in parallel in the United Kingdom and in South Africa. The French research team notably collaborated with the English team during the phase of methodological development.
