In this study, we determined the microbial community composition using 16S rRNA gene sequencing from surface to 2 meter depth in a soil core collected from Svalbard, Norway; spanning from the active surface layer (AL) into the permafrost layer (PL). Sub-samples of the soil were thawed and incubated at 4-6°C and microbial activity was measured as CO2 production over 19 days. Our high sampling resolution allowed us to obtain a detailed, fine-scale microbial community profile with depth.
