Accumulation of volatile fatty acids periodically occur in anaerobic digestion as a result of unbalanced growth between acidogenic bacteria and methanogens, and little is known about the microorganisms involved in the recovery from acidified conditions. Our aim was to use a combination of metagenomics, amplicon sequencing and Protein-SIP to characterize and identify microorganisms involved in recovery from various concentrations of acetate during anaerobic digestion.
