Thermococcus kodakaraensis strain KOD1. This organism was originally identified as Pyrococcus sp. strain KOD1. It was isolated from a solfatara on Kodakara Island, Japan. A gene disruption system has been developed for this organism. A thermostabile DNA polymerase is commercially available that was originally isolated from this organism and research is continuing to develop commercial applications for other heat-stable enzymes from this organism
