The statistics of the German Volkshochschulen have been compiled annually by the German Institute for Adult Education (DIE), Leibniz Centre for Lifelong Learning e.V. since 1962. All adult education centres that are members of a state association of the German Volkshochschul-Verbandes are required to report data. The Adult Education Statistics (VHS-Statistics) are thus designed as a complete enumeration.
Primary data from the surveys are available as scientific-use files for research purposes from the 1987 reporting year onwards.
The reference period of the surveys is a calendar year (1.1. to 31.12. of the reporting year).
Data are available on the structure of provision, on financing and on institutional aspects of German adult education centres.
The data sets currently provided represent the first two reporting years after an extensive revision process - 2018 and 2019.
They are based on data reports from the adult education centres, which are usually submitted via an online reporting form. The DIE ensures the quality of the data through plausibility checks.
A formal application to the DIE is a prerequisite for using the data.
